How Does Your Garden Grow?

Image
Tell me, how does your garden grow?  Ours grows very, very s l o w l y . For as long as I can remember my mother always had a garden.  When we first moved into our home, The Mister had a garden for many years.  Then t his year, is the first year, in a very long time that we've had a garden.   I have to admit that we did start the garden much later than anticipated.   We built our own raised garden beds , which, did take us much longer than I had originally planned on.  Darn those busy schedules of ours, always getting in the way of the fun stuff.    ;) At any rate, after being gone for a week on vacation last week, I was pleasantly surprised and thrilled to come home to this lovely, growing, garden. I was able to pick my first tomato tonight, as well as some cucumbers.  It won't be long now before everything is producing enough for my family.   Here is a run down on the plants we planted. Our, Not So Secret, Garden

Image
Hello Spring!  Hello Sunshine!!  Hello Produce!!!   What?!  Yup, we are going to grow our own produce this year.  We go through so much of it, so why not?!  We used to have a cute little garden in the backyard, when the kids were little, very little.  However, the trampoline for the kids took over that spot for a little while.  Which has been a great source of fun for the kids...and adults, but we need our garden space back. While our backyard is not large, we had to do a little rearranging, some woodworking, and a partial backyard make over, and we now have a garden spot!   I am beyond thrilled!  (A garden box, how-to, will be coming in a later post) I am so excited to have fresh tomatoes, fresh strawberries, and fresh cucumbers. Actually we are going to plant a ton more and even, The Mister, is getting on the garden and canning this year.  He makes a mean batch of dill pickles and br...

Pallet to Potting Bench

Image
This last summer I was so inspired by all the potting benches that were being made via Pinterest and I just love re-purposing old pallets into something, plus, I didn't want to spend a lot of money on making one. I took four old pallets that were donated to me and turned them into a wonderful potting bench for my back deck. Sorry for the terrible cell phone photos! I actually left 2 of the pallets alone, and I disassembled the other 2. 1)     I took the slats from the disassembled pallets and started to place them in between the slats on the pallets that were still together.  You can kind of see that in the bottom two pallets there in the picture .   2)     After I had them placed exactly the way I wanted them too, I secured them by screwing them down.   That was the top of my bench, and the bottom. 3)     The Mister had some 2x4's leftover in the garage, so I just measured how tall I wan...
